Emotions encapsulate memory and vice versa. The body holds these memories and can choose when to release them through movement. We get the chance to explore, process, take time, and all the in between because of the gift of movement. Rhythms inside of that also carry conversations. Particularly the sound scape that fills the space and pacing of a work are very large parts of my storytelling. Revealing the wonderful dialogue that ensues between what is heard and what is seen.
Through finding the balance between comfort and honest confrontation, I tow the lines of emotional, experimental, and relatable storytelling. Where I find my inspiration is through the narratives of each human’s journey and the constant state of change in this life as our personal histories are created. I love to pinpoint a moment in time to pause, explore and release before change hits once more.
Through process-based rehearsal, discussion, and movement exploration, such as guided improvisation, my focus is on the dancers and what they can hone in, so that their authenticity shines through. If a story is told, I find it cannot come from a halfhearted narrator. But a push does not need to be forced. Creating a space of understanding and steadiness informs what is able to be achieved when risks are taken. I like taking those risks and trusting the artists to run alongside me as the work unfolds.
